
Baseball Announces Hiring of Walt Jones

NEW ORLEANS –Tulane Head Coach Jay Uhlman recently announced the hiring of Walt Jones to his staff as an Assistant Coach. He will work as the outfield coach while also assisting the hitters and aiding in recruiting.
"We are excited to add a person of Walt's character and expertise to our staff," said Coach Uhlman. "He is well respected in our profession and has served in a variety of roles. Walt will represent Tulane well in the recruiting world where he has a deep understanding of the landscape in Louisiana and the Southeast. He will bring positive teaching and mentoring to the young men in our program. Not only will his experience assist our players in their daily development, it will also provide our staff with the full scope of those experiences. We are honored to welcome Walt, his wife Alicia and their two daughters Harper and Emory to Tulane."
Jones arrives at Tulane after most recently working as the head coach at Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) during the 2025 season. As the leader of the Colonels, the program executed small-ball well in ranking in the top half in the Atlantic Sun Conference in sacrifice flies and sacrifice bunts. The year was highlighted by outfielder A.J. Groeneveld earning ASUN All-Freshman Team honors.
He was named the acting head coach of the program in March 2024 and helped lead EKU to its third consecutive ASUN Tournament berth. After the successful run to get to the tournament, he was the named the full-time leader of the program in May 2024. Outfielder Ron Franklin Jr. capped an outstanding 2024 season by earning All-ASUN First Team recognition while Tait Nunnally was chosen to the league's All-Freshman Team.
Jones, prior to his stint as the leader of the Colonels, worked as the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Kentucky starting in the fall of 2020. Jones also served as the hitting instructor and coached base running and the outfielders in his role as an assistant. He helped the Colonels to a championship season in 2022 when EKU went 38-20 and claimed a share of the ASUN Conference West Division Championship with a 20-10 league mark. The 38 wins were the most in a season since the 1990 season and the program's first conference title since 2012. Outfielder Kendal Ewell was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country.
EKU followed the championship campaign with 29 wins in 2023, making it the winningest two-year period for the program since 1989 and 1990. The 2023 Colonels set a new program record for walks drawn in a season to break a 42-year-old record. Will King, who was chosen to the ABCA Rawlings Midwest All-Region Team, was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 2023 MLB Draft.
Jones was the scouting director for the Prep Baseball Report-Louisiana and national JUCO scouting director for Prep Baseball Report-National from July 2019 to the fall of 2020.
Before his time with Prep Baseball Report, Jones was the recruiting coordinator and Associate Head Coach at Nicholls from 2014 to 2019. While at Nicholls, Jones oversaw recruiting, coached the outfield and hitters, and organized fundraising events.
In 2015, Jones helped the Colonels turn in back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time since 1992-93.
Jones joined the Colonels as a hitting coach in the fall of 2014 and helped Nicholls reach a 32-26 record, with a 20-10 mark in Southland Conference action.
Prior to Nicholls, Jones was an Assistant Coach at Chipola College from 2012 through 2013.
Before joining the Chipola staff, Jones was at Nicholls where he served as a Volunteer Assistant Coach and the Director of Baseball Operations from 2009 to 2012.
Jones is a 2008 Nicholls graduate where he played the 2007 and 2008 seasons serving as the team's starting right fielder and lead-off hitter. He also played collegiate baseball at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College for a season after starting his career as a football player at the University of North Alabama during the 2003 campaign.
