
Baseball’s Montiel Drafted In 12th Round By Arizona Diamondbacks

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane lefthanded pitcher Tayler Montiel was picked 363rd overall in the 12th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday afternoon on the second day of the 2025 Major League Draft.
Montiel, who worked out of the bullpen for Tulane during the 2025 season, went 5-2 on the campaign. He tied for the team lead in victories while appearing in 26 games. He totaled a 3.53 ERA with a pair of saves plus 54 strikeouts in 43.1 innings thrown. Motiel limited opponents to a .187 batting average against while only surrendering a total of seven extra base hits. He was named to the AAC All-Tournament Team after appearing each of the team's victories while throwing 5.2 scoreless frames with six strikeouts and a save.
In his three years at Tulane, Montiel appeared in 51 games, won six games plus struck out 70 in 68 innings worked.
He is the second Tulane pitcher selected in the 2025 draft after Michael Lombardi was chosen in the second round (61st overall) by the Kansas City Royals. Overall, he is the 137th player that Tulane has had drafted in the program's long and storied history. The program has now seen six players selected over the last two seasons. This also marks the third time in the last five years that Tulane has had multiple players selected in a single draft and the 36th time since 1965. This is the first time that Tulane has had multiple pitchers selected in the draft since 2021
Montiel is the sixth Tulane player ever selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks following outfielder Jonny Kaplan (2003), pitcher Micah Owings (2005), pitcher Sean Morgan (2007), pitcher Alex Byo (2003) and pitcher Trevor Simms (2016).
Tulane went 33-25 in 2025 plus reached the AAC Championship Game for the third straight season. The program had five All-AAC selections on the year in Lombardi (P – 1st), Connor Rasmussen (2B – 1st), Gavin Schulz (DH – 2nd), Jason Wachs (All-Freshman) and Tanner Chun (All-Freshman). The team also had three chosen for the AAC's All-Tournament Team in Schulz, Montiel and Theo Bryant IV.
