
Green Wave Outlasts Sam Houston

HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Tulane volleyball earned its first victory of the 2025 season on Saturday as it toppled the hosts of the Bearkat Invitational, Sam Houston, 3-2. The Green Wave jumped out to a two-set lead before holding off a comeback by the Bearkats by winning the final set 17-15.
Junior Avery Burks paced the offensive attack for the Wave as she recorded 24 kills to lead all players in the match. Her performance over the weekend earned her a selection to the All-Tournament Team. Across the three matches for Tulane Burks tallied 64 kills, 36 digs, and three blocks.
Jordan White was the only other player with double figures in kills for the Green Wave on Saturday finishing with 11 to go with a team-high seven blocks. Sabrina Skyers joined her defensively at the net to also add six blocks of her own.
The duo of Zoe Rachow and Katherine Crosley once again led the Wave in assists with Rachow recording 26 followed by 25 from Crosley. Meanwhile, Dayla Ortiz set a career-high with 20 digs against the Bearkats.
Tulane gained the advantage early against Sam Houston by securing wins in the first set 25-19 and the second set 25-17. The tone was set in the first set by the Wave swinging with a .516 hit percentage and a .548 kill percentage.
However, the Bearkats were able to manage a response in the next two sets to even the score as the Green Wave dropped the third set 25-22 and the fourth set 25-21.
With its third consecutive match reaching a fifth and final set Tulane had to dig deep to claim its first victory of the year. The fifth set went back and forth until Sam Houston reached a 10-7 advantage over the Wave.
A kill by White sparked a 4-0 run that claimed the lead for the Green Wave before the team push to match point with a 14-12 advantage. The Bearkats battled back again to tie the score at 14-14 and 15-15, but Tulane got the final say on back-to-back kills by Burks and Lauryn Mack to secure the set 17-15 and win the match 3-2.
UP NEXT
Tulane will return home to Uptown to host the Green Wave Invitational from Friday, September 5, to Sunday, September 7. In the three-day tournament the Wave will face Lamar, Louisiana Tech, and Southern.
