Sep 5, 2025 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS โ In its fourth consecutive five-set battle Tulane volleyball picked up the 3-2 victory over Lamar on Friday night to open the Green Wave Classic. The five-set match marked the first time the Wave has played in four straight matches that have reached the final set.
With the win, the Green Wave improved to 2-2 so far this season and earned its first victory in the friendly confines of Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Tulane was once again powered by junior Avery Burks and freshman Lauryn Mack on offense. Burks led all players in the match with 20 kills to mark her fourth consecutive match with 20-plus kills to open the season. She also added 19 digs while Mack tallied 17 kills to go with 11 digs.
Zoe Rachow set the table for the Green Wave offensively as she recorded a season-best 34 assists to go with 10 digs and a pair of service aces.
On the defensive side of the net Dayla Ortiz set a career-high with 24 digs while also posting a team-high three service aces.
Tulane got out to a strong start against the Cardinals taking a 1-0 advantage in the match by winning the first set 25-16. After Lamar took the lead early in the set the Green Wave scored seven unanswered point to gain control of the opening set. Once Tulane had the lead it never gave it up as Mack closed out the set victory with her fourth kill of the set.
However, Lamar had an answer for the solid opening set by the Wave. The Cardinals evened the overall score 1-1 by winning an intense back-and-forth affair in the second set 25-23. Momentum remained on the side of Lamar in the third set as Tulane fell behind 2-1 after dropping the third set 25-22.
The Green Wave did shy away from the challenge heading into the fourth set. After the two team exchanged points to open the set Tulane brought in Lily Wedman off the bench to bring a spark on the court. With Wedman on the floor claimed control of the set and never looked back. Burks led the offensive charge with six kills while Wedman held down the defense with nine digs as Tulane forced a fifth and final set by winning 25-15 in the fourth.
Tulane kept the momentum rolling into the fifth set jumping on the Cardinals quickly to take a 4-1 lead. After Lamar pulled the score to 5-4 in favor of the Wave, Tulane responded with a 7-1 scoring run to take a strangle hold on the lead. Burks and Mack each tallied four kills in the final set to help the Green Wave secure the match victory 3-2 by taking the fifth set 15-9.
