Tulane Sweeps Past Temple

NEW ORLEANS โ Tulane volleyball (9-4, 1-1) earned its first American Conference victory of the season by sweeping the Temple Owls (11-5, 1-1) inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday. The win snapped a four-match losing streak for the Green Wave against the Owls.
With the victory, the Wave also improved to 7-1 at home on the season including 1-1 in league play. Tulane moved to 8-10 overall and 5-4 at home against Temple as well after the win.
Leading the way offensively for the Green Wave was Avery Burks who finished with 16 kills to go along with 15 digs. The performance marked her seventh double-double of the season and the 12th time in 13 matches she has tallied double figures in kills. Fatima Samb was the next best performer for Tulane finishing with eight kills on a .571 hitting percentage.
The duo of Zoe Rachow and Katherine Crosley set the table for the Wave offense combining for 34 of the team's 39 assists. Rachow paced the team with 18 assists while Crosley followed with 16.
Defensively, Dayla Ortiz anchored Tulane alongside Burks as the pair recorded 16 and 15 digs, respectively. Sabrina Skyers and Ava Derbes patrolled the net as Skyers collected four blocks while Derbes added three.
Temple put the pressure on the Green Wave early in the first scoring the first five points of the day. However, Tulane quickly settled in to respond with a 6-1 run to climb back into the set. The two teams exchanged the lead four times before reaching a 23-23 tie. The Wave managed to clinch the set 25-23 on a kill by Derbes followed by a service ace from Ortiz.
The tightly contested battle continued into the second set as the Wave and the Owls knotted in a tie nine separate times. Tulane finally broke free with five-straight points to take a 21-16 advantage before securing the set 25-19.
In the third set the Green Wave pulled out in front early taking a 10-5 lead over the Owls. Tulane was able to extend its advantage to six points briefly, but Temple was not going to go down without a fight. After the score eventually pulled to a 23-23 tie the Wave scored the final two points to win the set 25-23 and clinch the 3-0 sweep over the Owls.
UP NEXT
Tulane will hit the road for the first time in conference play visiting Charlotte and East Carolina next weekend. The Green Wave will take on the 49ers on Friday, October 3, at 5 p.m. CT before making the trip over to face the Pirates on Sunday, October 5, at 11 a.m. CT.
