Tulane Sweeps Southern to go 3-0 in Green Wave Classic

NEW ORLEANS โ Tulane volleyball finished a perfect 3-0 in the Green Wave Classic by sweeping past Southern 3-0 on Sunday afternoon. The unblemished weekend for the Wave marked the first time Tulane has swept a home tournament since going 3-0 in the Tulane Invitational to open the 2021 season.
With the win, the Green Wave earned its fourth consecutive victory to improve to 4-2 so far this season and including 3-0 at home. The victory also kept Tulane undefeated against the Jaguars moving to 27-0 all-time against Southern.
Avery Burks and Sabrina Skyers each earned All-Tournament honors for Tulane in the sweep of the Green Wave Classic. The Green Wave pair was joined by Maja Malinowska and Gabby Baker of Lamar, Zari Gillispie of Louisiana Tech, and Ariana Brown of Southern.
The duo of Avery Burks and Lauryn Mack led the offensive attack for Tulane each tallying 10 kills against the Jaguars. Ava Derbes followed closely behind adding nine kills to go with a pair of blocks.
Setting the table for the Wave offense in the win were Zoe Rachow with 22 assists and Katherine Crosley with eight. Defensively, Dayla Ortiz paced the team with 10 digs while Lily Wedman posted nine and Annabelle He and Rachow each added five.
The first set between the Green Wave and the Jaguars went back and forth through the first several points until Tulane found a rhythm with a 7-2 run to claim control. After pulling in front 20-14 the Wave put the set away on back-to-back points from Sabrina Skyers to win 25-17.
Tulane carried the momentum into the second set jumping out to a 9-3 advantage. The lead reached seven points for the Wave before Southern began to climb back into the set pulling within two at 12-10 in favor of Tulane. The Green Wave responded to extend the lead again, but Southern continued to hang around until Mack closed the set with a pair of kills for a 25-22 win.
In the third set Tulane once again claimed the early advantage and never gave it back. The lead ultimately reached as many as six on multiple occasions during the set with the Wave ultimately winning 25-19 to secure the 3-0 sweep of the Jaguars.
UP NEXT
Tulane will hit the road to Mobile, Alabama, to compete in the Jaguar Invitational hosted by South Alabama on September 12-13. The Green Wave will face Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, September 12, and South Alabama on Saturday, September 13.
