
Baseball Falls 10-0 To Charlotte On Friday

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Tulane baseball team (23-24, 8-11 American) lost a 10-0 seven inning run-shortened game on the road to Charlotte (21-24, 6-13 American) on Friday night, May 1, at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
J.D. Rodriguez (5-1) started for Tulane and surrendered a season-high eight runs on 10 hits in three innings with five strikeouts. All three of the inherited runs Rodriguez left on the bases scored once he exited. LuisPablo Navarro threw a scoreless inning with one hit allowed. Michael Devenney surrendered a pair of runs on two hits in his two innings of work with three strikeouts.
Tulane was limited to three hits and a six total base runner in the game. James Agabedis, Nate Johnson, and Matthias Haas all reached on singles. Tanner Chun walked and stole a base. Kaikea Harrison and Tye Wood both drew walks.
Charlotte's Ryan Combs (2-2) threw a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts on 109 pitches to earn the victory.
Charlotte started the scoring on a three-run home run from Dylan Koontz in the opening inning.
The 49ers added a pair of runs, 5-0, in the second on a Adrian Jimenez infield single and Cody Gunderson base hit up the middle.
Tulane threatened in the fourth with back-to-back two out singles from Haas and Nate Johnson, but the final Tulane batter struck out looking to end the frame.
The 49ers quickly capitalized on the shift in momentum with three runs in the frame on a Koontz sacrifice fly, an RBI single from Alec DeMartino and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Cale Stricklin to put the score at 8-0.
The 49ers finished the scoring with a pair of runs in the sixth, 10-0, on a Stricklin two-run single.
Next, Tulane plays the second game of the series against the 49ers on Saturday, May 2, starting at 4 p.m. (CT) at Hayes Stadium.
