
Baseball Drops Second Game Of Series to Charlotte, 8-2

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Tulane baseball team (23-25, 8-12 American) lost the team's second straight game to Charlotte (22-24, 7-13 American) on Saturday evening, May 2, at Hayes Stadium in Charlotte by an 8-2 score.
Jake Toporek (1-5) started and took the loss after surrendering five runs in 2.2 innings worked. Blaise Wilcenski allowed a pair of runs on four hits in 1.2 innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen. Trey Cehajic threw 3.2 inning and allowed a run on three hits and three walks.
Tye Wood and Matthias Haas lead the offense with a pair of hits each. Haas also drove in a run. James Agabedis had a hit and an RBI. Trent Liolios totaled a hit and a run scored. Nate Johnson and Johnny Elliott both tallied a hit. Elliott also walked while Johnson drew a pair of bases on balls. Tanner Chun walked and scored a run.
Eddie Copper (4-3) earned the victory for Charlotte with five innings and one run plus six strikeouts. Chase Carson picked up his first save of the season in throwing the final four innings with four strikeouts.
Tulane scored first with a run in the third. Liolios reached on a two-out double and came in to score on a Haas single through the infield.
Charlotte took the lead with five runs in the bottom of the frame, 5-1, on Adrian Jimenez's ground out, a Dylan Koontz RBI single and a three-run home run from Alex DeMartino.
The Green Wave loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning on a Chun walk, a Wood single and an Agabedis hit-by-pitch, but the next batter was retired on a ground out to the pitcher to end the frame.
Jimenez drove in another run with a double in the fourth to increase the Charlotte lead to 6-1.
The 49ers put another run on the board, 7-1, in the fifth on an RBI single from Cale Stricklin.
Tulane scored the team's second run, 7-2, on an Agabedis ground out in the sixth to score Chun. Chun started the rally when he reached on a dropped third strike and went all the way to third on a fielding error from the Charlotte first baseman.
The 49ers added a run to the advantage, 8-2, on a sacrifice fly from Robert Nedry.
Next, Tulane plays the final game of the series against the 49ers on Sunday, May 3, starting at 12 p.m. (CT) at Hayes Stadium.
