New Orleans - Tulane Athletics Director Sandy Barbour announced Friday, Jan. 29, the hiring of New Orleans-native Betsy Becker Ferrer as the Green Wave's new head volleyball coach.
Becker Ferrer posted a four-year record of 78-58 at the University of New Orleans, including a 20-12 mark during the 1998 season. Her last Privateer club went 10-4 Sun Belt Conference play and tied for second in the league. UNO finished fourth-or-higher in the Sun Belt in all four seasons under Becker Ferrer.
"Betsy is exactly what we were looking for in a volleyball coach," said Barbour. "Her enthusiasm and work ethic has made her a success. We are very excited about what she brings to the Tulane volleyball program."
Becker Ferrer, 28, is a 1992 graduate of the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where she was a three-sport letterwinner in volleyball, basketball and track. She was four-time team MVP of Catholic's volleyball team.
Upon graduation she returned home to the Crescent City as an assistant volleyball coach at UNO, a position she held for two years. After spending a year as an assistant at the University of Denver and head coach at Jefferson High School in Edgewater, Colo., Becker Ferrer returned to UNO as head coach in 1995.
Her first Privateer team went 16-20 overall, 5-4 in the Sun Belt, before improving the next season, 1996, to 17-18, 6-3. That season saw Becker Ferrer lead UNO to its first win over an Southeastern Conference opponent (Alabama) in nine seasons.
UNO was an impressive 25-8 overall in 1997 and earned the school's first-ever NCAA district ranking.
Becker Ferrer replaces Sonya Hanson, who posted a 160-169 record in 10 seasons at Tulane.
