
Women's Basketball Falls to No. 14 LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. - - No. 14 LSU made seven of eight free throws inside the final 33 seconds to hold off a Tulane rally, as the Lady Tigers posted a 68-61 win over the Green Wave women's basketball team at the Maravich Assembly Center on Sunday.
Tulane falls to 4-5 overall with the loss, while LSU improves to 4-3 overall. Each of Tulane's last two losses have been to teams ranked in the Top 15 and have been by an average of just 6.5 points.
The Green Wave held a 44-38 lead with 10:45 remaining in the game, before LSU posted a 13-0 run to take the lead for good. Tulane would trim the lead to three on five different occasions, including twice inside the final 90 seconds, but LSU responded each time before sealing the win at the charity stripe.
Janell Burse lead all scorers with 24 points and 19 rebounds, while Gwen Slaughter and Kelly Scanlon each added nine points. LSU had four players in double figures, led by Marie Ferdinand who had 20 points and six rebounds.
Free throws proved to be the difference in the game, especially in the second half when LSU enjoyed 21 trips to the charity stripe. By comparison, Tulane took just seven shots from the free throw line in the second frame. Overall, LSU made 19-of-27 attempts from the free throw line, while Tulane was 7-of-14 from the charity stripe.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, as neither team enjoyed a lead of more than seven points and both teams led by as many as five on two different occasions. LSU was up 22-17 with 8:57 left before a jumper from Tiffany Wilson and a three-pointer from Kelly Scanlon gave the Green Wave a one-point cushion with 6:06 remaining. Tulane would ultimately take a 32-31 lead into the lockerroom. In the second half, Tulane would push its lead to as many as seven, and led 44-38, with 10:45 remaining, before LSU surged into the lead with its 13-0 burst.
Both teams struggled from the floor, with Tulane holding an advantage with a 39.4 percent shooting performance (26-of-66). LSU hit just 22-of-62 shots (35.5 percent), but was 5-of-16 from the three-point line, while the Green Wave managed just two three-pointers on 11 attempts. Tulane also held a 49-38 edge in rebounding and committed a season-low 12 turnovers.
Tulane takes an 11-day break for semester exams before returning to action on Thursday, Dec. 21, against Boston University in Fogelman Arena.
