HAMMOND, La. - James Burgess' two-out two-run pinch-hit home run in the top of the eighth inning gave Tulane (14-9-1)a 4-2 win over the Southeastern Lions (14-16) on Wednesday, marking just the second road win for the Wave this season.
Heading into the eighth inning the Green Wave and Lions were tied at two runs each but a two out walk by Southeastern's Josh Kaplan set the stage for a dramatic Tulane comeback. With Mickey McKee on first base, freshman Burgess smashed a pinch hit home run over the right field wall to give Tulane a 4-2 advantage over the Lions. Until the lead off walk and home run Kaplan retired the eight previous batters, half of which he struck out.
For Tulane, Steve Shirley was 1-for-4 with one RBI, while Burgess went 1-for-1 with his first collegiate home run.
The Green Wave's Matt Foster (2-0) picked up the win in his first start as a member of the Tulane squad. He went seven plus innings, scattered five hits gave up two runs and struck out a career high seven batters. Jared Berkowitz relieved Foster in the eighth and recorded his first save of the season and his career. Through two innings of work Berkowitz gave up one hit and struck out two.
SLU's Kaplan fell to 2-5 on the season after 2 2/3 innings of work. He gave up two runs on one hit and struck out four.
Tulane continues Conference USA play as they travel to Texas to take on Houston beginning on Friday, March, 24 at 7:00 p.m.
