HOUSTON, Texas - Tulane volleyball standouts Britney Hurst and Anastasia Kenon were named the All-Conference USA team, the league announced Wednesday night during the conference awards banquet at Houston's Athletic/Alumni Facility.
Hurst and Kenon, both outside hitters, earned second-team all-conference honors, and Kenon was named to the league's all-freshman team. It marked the third consecutive season that Tulane has had a player make the all-conference squad dating back to 1999 when then-junior outside hitter Kim Sentmore earned second-team All-Conference USA recognition.
"We feel honored to have two players on the all-conference team," head coach Betsy Becker said. "All year, we've relied heavily on Anastasia and Britney and they find a way to get the job done. It's nice to see that other coaches around the league see the same things we see in them."
Hurst, a team co-captain, leads the Green Wave in kills with 4.56 per game, and ranks second on the squad in digs with a 3.17 average. She has recorded 17 double-doubles, including five straight to open the season. Hurst tallied double-digit kill totals in 26 of Tulane's 29 matches, and had 18 matched with double-digit dig totals.
One of the Green Waves' go-to players on offense, Hurst hit .300 or better 13 times, including 10 matches of .350 or better and four .400-plus contests. During the season, Hurst posted career highs in both kills and digs with 27 kills at Southern Miss (9/25) and 22 digs at Houston (9/27).
"Britney brings a power to this game that only a select few players bring," Becker said. "She's truly special to the make-up of our team and has worked hard to become the player that she is."
Kenon, meanwhile, earned second-team all-conference and all-freshman team honors after leading the team and ranking third in Conference USA with 3.52 digs per game. Kenon also leads the club with 31 service aces and ranks second in kills with 3.87 per game.
After redshirting with a knee injury last season, Kenon tallied 18 double-doubles during the 2001 season. She had double-digit kills in 24 of 29 matches, including a career-high 23 vs. UNO, and had double-digit dig totals on 19 occasions.
"For her to make both all-conference and all-freshman is a huge accomplishment," Becker said. "She's truly a freshman phenom, and the scary thing is that she can only get better. Once she gets stronger and develops a shot repertoire, she will be a very formidable volleyball player."
The Green Wave returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 15 when Tulane participates in the 2001 Healthy Choice Conference USA Tournament. With a 7-9 league record, Tulane earned the No. 9 seed in the tournament and will take on eighth-seeded Memphis tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in Hofheinz Pavilion.
