NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
Preseason All-Conference USA selection Teana McKiver scored a career-high 27 points to lead the Tulane women's basketball team to an 86-62 win over High Point at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
Tulane moved to 1-0 to start the season, while High Point dropped to 0-1, as the game marked the season-opener for both squads.
McKiver's 27 points came on 12-of-16 shooting in just 24 minutes of action. She grabbed five rebounds, had an assist, a blocked shot and a steal. Senior Sarah Goree added 19 points, connecting on 5-of-7 three-point attempts, while contributing five assists and a steal without committing a turnover in 27 minutes.
"Teana McKiver had a great game on both ends of the floor for us tonight," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Whenever we needed a basket, she got it for us. I think our offense was good at times, but we still have some work to do on our defense."
Tulane jumped out to a 9-2 lead and slowly added to the cushion before back-to-back three-pointers from Goree gave the Green Wave a 25-11 advantage at the 13:24 mark. High Point would pull to within 10, but Tulane used a 24-8 burst to build a 51-25 lead. Seven different Tulane players scored during the run, led by six points from Gwen Slaughter. High Point would rally to within 19 before the Green Wave took a 55-34 lead into the locker room.
Slaughter posted her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. She connected on 6-of-9 shots from the floor and added two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
High Point hit a pair of three-pointers to start the second half, trimming the Tulane lead to just 14 points at the 16:35 mark. However, McKiver added back-to-back lay-ups, then assisted on a Tiffany Wilson to restore Tulane's 20-point cushion and the Wave would cruise to the 24-point victory.
Sophomore Kelly Nadeau had a career-high nine assists while adding a pair of rebounds and a pair of steals. Sophomore Kaisha Lymon pulled down 10 rebounds.
Tulane held a slight 47-46 edge in rebounding, but forced 17 Panther turnovers, picking up 11 steals in the process. Eight different Green Wave players recorded at least one steal, while nine turned in at least one assist. The Wave connected on 46.6 percent of its shots, thanks to a blistering 57.1 percent performance in the first half. High Point hit just 32.0 percent of its shots.
Tulane returns to action next week, as the Green Wave travel to San Juan, Puerto Rico for the San Juan Shootout. The Wave will meet host UPR-Mayaguez in the first round before facing either Kansas or Hampton in the second round.
