NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane (30-8, 9-5 C-USA) baseball team recorded a season high seven home runs, three players recording a pair each, en route to a 16-10 win over Houston (21-19, 12-2) on Saturday afternoon.
James Jurries, Jake Gautreau and Michael Aubrey each hit two home runs, a season high for all three. On the afternoon Jurries was 2-for-6 with a game high five RBI. Aubrey was 3-for-6 with three RBI and Gautreau was 2-for-4 with two RBI. All three players scored two runs each.
For the second day Houston scored one run in the first inning, taking the early lead. Tulane wasted no time in putting up three runs of their own in the bottom of the second, marking the first time in the series the Wave held the lead. Andy Cannizaro hit a two-run single followed by a Matt Groff sacrifice to give the Wave a 3-1 lead heading in to the third.
Tulane continued to swing the bats as they outscored the Cougars 6-2 in the next three innings, putting up a pair in each.
A big five-run bottom of the seventh helped preserve the win for the Wave offsetting a late game rally by Houston. Home runs by Jurries, Gautreau and Anthony Giarratano as well as a double by Cannizaro contributed to five runs scored. The Green Wave scored in every inning but the first and sixth.
Tulane's Andrew Corona (5-1) got the win. He went five innings, scattered five hits, gave up three runs and struck out four.
Austin Faught took the loss. He went just 2 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on five hits.
The rubber match of the series begins at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 15.
