
Tulane Baseball Sinks UNO 12-1

METAIRIE, La. - A commanding night at the plate and strong pitching helped Tulane (36-8) to a 12-1 victory over UNO (20-23) on Wednesday evening at Zephyr Field.
Tulane posted its first regular season sweep of UNO since 1991, when the Wave went 2-0 against the Privateers.
For the seventh consecutive game, Tulane recorded 10 or more hits.
Back-to-back triples by Jon Kaplan and Andy Cannizaro started the game for the Green Wave. The RBI knock by Cannizaro extends his hitting streak to 16 games, the team's longest of the season. Cannizaro scored on a sacrifice fly by Jake Gautreau to give Tulane a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Wave never looked back.
UNO's Drew Pizza drove in the Privateer's only run of the game in the top of the second.
Tulane scored a pair of runs in the second. Matt Mann drew a two out walk and scored on a double by Kaplan. On the evening, Kaplan was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Cannizaro sent Kaplan home on his second hit of the night. He recorded a pair of RBI and scored one run.
The Wave scored two more runs in the fourth, giving Tulane a 5-1 lead.
UNO starter and losing pitcher Shaylar Hatch (6-5) exited the game in the fifth. He went four plus innings, gave up five runs, on seven hits and struck out one.
In the inning the Wave put up a five spot on five hits, including back-to-back doubles by Gautreau and Steve Shirley.
Tulane's Andrew Corona (6-1) got the win in his 10th appearance of the season. He went five innings, scattered four hits and gave up one run. Corona struck out four. Reliever Joey Charron went two innings, allowing just one hit. Beau Richardson and Matt Foster combined for two additional scoreless innings.
James Jurries extended his hitting streak to a season high eight games, with a double to lead off the sixth. He scored on a single by Matt Groff. On the evening Jurries was 2-for-5 and Groff recorded a game high three hits.
The Green Wave added a run in the eighth and went on to defeat UNO 12-1.
Tulane hosts UAB this weekend in a three-game Conference USA series. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 27.
