NEW ORLEANS, La. - - James Jurries drove in a pair of runs with a two-out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the eighth to lift Tulane to a 9-8 come-from-behind win over Oklahoma State at Turchin Stadium in the New Orleans Regional on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane (53-10) advances to the Super Regional for the first time in school history and will meet either LSU or VCU. The win was Tulane's 16th this season in its last at-bat and capped a furious comeback that saw the Green Wave erase a 7-1 deficit. Oklahoma State ended its season with a 42-22 record.
Joey Charron (9-1) picked up his fifth win in eight days, with all five coming relief. He was named the New Orleans Regional Most Valuable Player after earning all three of Tulane's victories in the tournament. Against Oklahoma State, Charron pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one run with a strikeout.
The Oklahoma State bats were hot early, as the Cowboys took a 7-1 lead after the top half of the fourth inning. But the Green Wave fought back with a pair of runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and three runs in the seventh to tie the game at 7-7 and set up Jurries' heroics in the eighth.
The Cowboys made things interesting in the top of the ninth, when short stop Paul Powell hit Charron's first pitch over the right centerfield fence to bring OSU to within 9-8. But Charron got Rob Watson to fly out to end the game.
Oklahoma State reliever Nick McCurdy (7-5) took the loss for the Cowboys, allowing two runs, both earned, in 1.2 innings of action
Jurries and Cannizaro each had three hits in five at-bats for Tulane, with Jurries contributing three RBI. OSU second baseman Nebasett Brown was 4-for-5, while Scott added three RBI for the Cowboys.
The rest of the All-Regional Team included Tulane's Scott Madden at catcher, Ole Miss' Josh Christian a first base, and the Green Wave trio of Anthony Giarratano, Jake Gautreau and Andy Cannizaro at second, third and short, respectively. Oklahoma State's Luke Scott and Jimbo McAuliff were joined in the outfield by Tulane's Jon Kaplan, while Michael Aubrey was selected to the All-Regional team as the designated hitter. Ole Miss' Ronnie Goodwin and Charron were chosen as the Regional's top pitchers.
