Cannizaro Leads Tulane Past LSU

METAIRIE, La.- Senior Andy Cannizaro turned in a record-setting performance to lead Tulane to a 9-4 win over LSU in the second game of the New Orleans Super Regional at Zephyr Field on Saturday.
Tulane's win evened the best of three series at a game apiece and lifted the Green Wave (54-11) to an NCAA best 54 wins. LSU dropped to 44-21-1. The winner of Sunday's final game will advance to the College World Series.
Cannizaro set Tulane single season records for hits and at-bats during the game, while driving in two and scoring three of the Green Wave's runs. He was 3-for-5 on the day with a single, double and a home run.
The Green Wave got off to a dream start with four runs in the top of the first. Jon Kaplan laced a leadoff home run over the left field fence before Cannizaro followed with a double. He scored on Jake Gautreau's single, while Gautreau scored on James Jurries' triple. After four batters, Tulane had hit for the cycle as a team, recording a single, double, triple and home run. Jurries would score on a Michael Aubrey groundout to give the Green Wave an early 4-0 lead.
LSU threatened in its half of the first, loading the bases with two outs. But Tulane starter Nick Bourgeois got Zeph Zinsman to stike out to end the inning, leaving all three Tiger runners stranded. LSU would leave nine runners stranded on the day.
Tulane added to its lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Aubrey hit a one out double before LSU starter Jason Scobie hit Matt Groff and walked Jay Heintz to load the bases. Anthony Giarratano then singled to center, scoring Aubrey and Groff to give the Wave a 6-0 cushion.
Cannizaro blasted his third home run of the year in the seventh to give Tulane a 7-0 lead. The Wave would add two more runs in the top of the ninth thanks a single from Cannizaro and a double from Gautreau.
Green Wave starter Nick Bourgeois kept the Tigers scoreless until the seventh. David Raymer smashed a home run into the levee seats in right center to kick off an LSU rally. The Tigers then used two walks, a double and a single to add three more runs, cutting the Tulane lead to 7-4. But Tulane reliever Joey Charron retired seven of the nine batters he faced, getting a double play for the first two outs in the ninth.
Tulane's top five batters were a combined 10-for-24 (.417), while LSU's top five hitters had just four hits in 18 at-bats (.222). Bourgeois (3-1) got the win for Tulane, striking out nine in 6.2 innings of work. Charron picked up his second save of the year. Scobie (4-3) took the loss for LSU, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in 5.1 innings.
The two teams will meet in the third and final game of the New Orleans Super Regional at Zephyr Field on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
