NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane baseball coach Rick Jones, who led the Green Wave to its first-ever College World Series in 2001 and a nation-leading 56-13 record, has agreed to a contract extension to remain at Tulane. The new contract is for a five-year term with a two-year option.
"My goals are the same as they have always been -- to have a nationally elite program in an academic setting," said Jones, who completed his eighth season at Tulane in 2001. "This new commitment from Rick Dickson and (President) Scott Cowen to me and my program reconfirms my believe that our goals can be achieved at Tulane. I love Tulane and I love New Orleans. It's hard to express how excited I am to know that I'm going to be able to realize my dreams and goals at Tulane."
Named the Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2001, Jones is Tulane's second winningest coach all-time, and has taken the Wave to six NCAA postseason tournaments. The team won its third Conference USA regular season title in 2001 and received its highest ranking under Jones, No. 5 according to Baseball America. Tulane was 14-1 versus its instate opponents and recorded more than 40 wins for the sixth time last season.
Jones has coached 26 All-Conference USA players, 27 players who signed professional contracts, 10 All-Americans, five C-USA Players of the Year and a pair of national Freshmen of the Year, including Michael Aubrey this year.
"We are committed to continuing to have an outstanding, elite baseball program," said Tulane Athletic Director Rick Dickson. "The first step in that process was to ensure the continued leadership of Rick Jones and his staff. I'm happy that we have been able to accomplish that here today."
