OMAHA, Neb. - The Stanford baseball team overcame a Tulane 8-0 lead with a late inning rallies, for a 13-11 win in the longest game in Colleges World Series history, four hours and 18 minutes, on Friday afternoon.
The Green Wave falls to 55-12 on the season, while Stanford improves to 49-16.
After a 1-2-3 first inning, Tulane got the bats going and posted five runs in the second inning. James Jurries hit a lead off single and advanced to second on a Michael Aubrey knock through the left side. Matt Groff advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, for the first out of the inning. Jay Heintz laced a bases-clearing double into right center for a 2-0 Wave lead. Tulane added three more runs on four hits, including a pair of RBI doubles by Jon Kaplan and Andy Cannizaro, to give the Green Wave a five-run lead after two innings.
Cannizaro was 2-for-3 on the afternoon and broke the Tulane career hits record with his double in the second. He has 347, snapping Dan Wagner's (1983-86) record. Kaplan finished the game with three RBI and two hits. Heintz was 2-for-5 with three RBI and his sixth double of the season.
The Wave extended its lead in the third. Aubrey singled followed by a Matt Groff walk. Heintz popped out to the second baseman and Stanford reliever Tim Cunningham walked Anthony Giarratano, loading the bases for Scott Madden. Aubrey scored on a Madden sacrifice fly and Kaplan doubled in a pair of runs. Tulane held an 8-0 advantage after three.
Tulane starter Nick Bourgeois kept the Cardinal to just two hits through four innings. A sacrifice fly by Carlos Quentin drove in Stanford's first run of the game and opened the door for a seven-run Cardinal rally in the fifth. Tulane held an 8-7 lead, which quickly disappeared.
Stanford tied the game and took the lead in the seventh. After walking the leadoff hitter, Barth Melius was replaced by Joey Charron. A Charron error allowed the next batter to reach. With runners on first and second, Sam Fuld doubled, sending in the tying run. Ryan Garko gave Stanford the lead with an RBI single. Matt Foster replaced Charron and proceeded to hit the first batter he faced. A two-run single by Johnny Ash into left center and a Gautreau error gave the Cardinal a 12-8 lead.
In the eighth inning, Gautreau doubled allowing two runs to score and brining the Wave within two runs of the Cardinal but the rally fell short and Stanford scored its 13th run of the game.
The losing pitcher was Charron (9-2). He went 1/3 of an inning, gave up three runs. Bourgeois went 4 2/3 innings, gave up five runs on four hits and struck out four.
Stanford's Mike Wodnicki (7-1) picked up the win. He went 1 2/3 innings, gave up three hits and two runs.
