NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University baseball team concluding its recruiting season with the signing of freshman Ricky Fairchild, junior college transfer Carter Hill and Division I transfer Brian Bormaster, head coach Rick Jones announced Tuesday.
Fairchild, Hill and Bormaster join the Green Wave after the most successful season in Tulane baseball history as the squad finished 56-13, won the Conference USA regular season and tournament championships and earned the school's first-ever berth into the College World Series.
"We're excited about the potential contribution of all three of the signees," Jones said. "Even though they were late summer signings, we fell that all three will have a positive impact on our program. Fairchild has a tremendous upside and was a big winner in high school, so that should bolster our bullpen. Bormaster and Hill, meanwhile, give us quality depth and versatility in the infield."
Fairchild, a pitcher from Dallas, Texas, comes to Tulane after a stellar prep career at Highland Park High where he helped the Scots to the 2001 regional finals. As a senior, he led the area in strikeouts (102), ERA (1.68 and wins (11) en route to first-team all-district honors. As a sophomore, Fairchild threw a complete-game no-hitter from the mound while going 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and six RBI at the plate in the same game.
He also was a two-year letterman in football, where he helped Highland Park to a pair of 10-0 regular-season finishes and led the area in receptions as a tight end in 2000.
Hill, a third baseman, joins the Green Wave program after a year at Jefferson Davis Community College, where he helped the Warhawks go 42-18 and advance to the NJCAA Regionals. Hill hit .305 while at Jeff Davis.
A native of New Orleans and graduate of University Lab, Hill was a four-year starter for the Cubs and earned first-team all-district honors as a freshman, sophomore and senior. As a senior, he earned all-state honors from the coaches and the LSWA, and helped the team win the district title and advance to the state championship game.
Hill also was a three-year starter for the University Lab football team where he played linebacker and quarterback. As a senior, he was voted team captain, earned team MVP honors and earned the Steven Smith Leadership Award after passing for more than 1,000 yards.
Bormaster, meanwhile, comes to Tulane after a year with perennial power, Rice University, where he hit .243 with two doubles and eight RBI in 29 games as a freshman. He went 3-for-4 against San Jose State, and led all middle infielders with a .973 fielding percentage.
A native of Bellaire, Texas, and graduate of Bellaire High, Bormaster was a first-team all-district honoree in 1998, 1999 and 2000 as a prepster where he helped the Cardinals advance to the state playoffs all four years. As a junior, he hit .667 in the playoffs and led Bellaire to the Texas 5-A State Championship and the USA Today National Championship. Along the way, Bormaster set a school record with 57 runs scored, breaking the former mark set by current New York Yankee Chuck Knoblauch in 1985, and earned AABC Mickey Mantle State Championship MVP honors.
As a senior, Bormaster hit .417 with six home runs, a team-best nine doubles and 33 RBI while not committing a single error en route to earning All-Greater Houston and all-state recognition. A three-year starter, Bormaster helped the team go 97-10 overall those three seasons as a second baseman, third baseman and pitcher.
The signing of Fairchild, Hill and Bormaster brings the Tulane recruiting class to nine as the Green Wave gets ready for a repeat performance in 2002.
