NEW ORLEANS, La. - Senior middle hitter Erin Dobyanski had a season-high 23 kills to go along with nine digs and nine total blocks as the Tulane University volleyball team defeated UNLV, 30-20, 30-32, 30-15, 30-23, Saturday afternoon at the Nokia Sugar Bowl Classic in Fogelman Arena.
Dobyanski led three Green Wave players finishing with double-digit kill totals as outside hitters Britney Hurst and Anastasia Kenon each tallied 11 to help lead Tulane (1-2) to its first victory of the year.
"We had a more balanced attack than yesterday," head coach Betsy Becker said. "Our middle attack was much more evident in today's match. We were a little predicable yesterday, but today, we were firing on all pistons. Our girls played a good game against a real quality opponent in UNLV."
The Green Wave outhit the Rebels .241 to .140, including an impressive .439 showing from Dobyanski who had just five errors in 41 attacks.
"Erin really did a nice job of providing leadership and placing the ball in open areas," Becker said. "Yesterday, we lived and died by the outside. But with Deva Fowler, Erin and Kim Swafford attacking from the middle, that opened up our outside attack and that helped us today. The whole team really did a good job of following the game plan."
The Tulane front line shut down the much-taller attack of the Rebels throughout the match, tallying a season-best 14 team blocks. Dobyanski paced the club with one solo block and eight block assists while Swafford tallied six block assists and Fowler had one solo block and four block assists.
The Green Wave also did an admirable job at the serving stripe, tallying 14 aces. Kenon led all players with five aces while freshman setter Katie Case and Dobyanski each had three. Karlyn Daly led all players with 13 digs, while Hurst had 11 and Kenon tallied 10.
Tulane took control of the match early in game en route to a 30-20 win. UNLV jumped out to a big lead in game two, but the Green Wave battled back to tie it a 28 before the Rebels went on to win 32-30. It was all Tulane the rest of the way, however. After taking getting ahead of UNLV in both games three and four, the Green Wave were able to quell a couple of Rebel runs en route to the victory.
Leiana Oswald led UNLV with 18 kills while Blair Wilkes had 12 and Patricia Assuncao tallied 11. Shannon Chase led the Rebel defense with 12 digs, and Assuncao finished with 11. The Green Wave returns to action later tonight when they host Baylor in the final match of the 2001 Nokia Sugar Bowl Classic.
