JACKSON, Miss. - Junior outside hitter Britney Hurst had 17 kills, 15 digs and three service aces as the Tulane University volleyball team made quick work of Jackson State, defeating the Tigers, 30-11, 30-17, 30-13, Tuesday night at T.B. Ellis Gym.
Hurst tallied a .400 attack percentage with just five errors in 30 attacks, and freshman middle hitter Deva Fowler hit .450 after tallying 11 kills and two errors in 20 attacks. The win improves the Green Wave to 2-3 on the young season, while Jackson State fell to 0-5.
"We were able to play everyone tonight and any time you can do that, that's always helpful," head coach Betsy Becker said. "I was real proud of our team because they played within our system. We made goals going into the match, and we were able to achieve those goals tonight against Jackson State."
The Green Wave took control of the match early on, taking a 6-0 lead in game one, and never looked back. As a team, Tulane tallied a .280 attack percentage, and the Green Wave defense held Jackson State to a -.109 attack percentage after six team blocks.
The Green Wave returns to action on Friday when Tulane hosts the 2001 Kathy Trosclair Memorial Classic. Joining Tulane in the annual event will be Coastal Carolina, Louisiana-Monroe, San Diego State and Southern Methodist.
