NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The University of New Orleans made 31-of-39 free throws en route to a 76-69 win over the Tulane women's basketball team at Lakefront Arena on Monday.
The Privateers outscored the Green Wave 17-8 inside the final four minutes to improve to 4-11 on the season. Tulane dropped to 13-3.
Tulane led 61-59 before a pair of free throws from UNO's Jessica Dunham tied the score. Jasmine Smiri followed with a long three-pointer and Yolanda White hit a free throw to give UNO a four-point cushion with 2:58 left. Tulane's Teana McKiver answered with an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the margin to one but Lora Ruddy and Smiri sandwiched jumpers around a pair of White free throws to give UNO a 71-64 lead with just under a minute to play, sealing the win.
McKiver led Tulane with 22 points, connecting on 8-of-11 shots from the floor, while pulling down four rebounds. Kelly Nadeau was 6-of-6 from the field, including 4-of-4 from behind the arc to finish with 16 points. She also added a pair of assists and three steals.
"You have to give UNO credit," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "They came out with intensity and never let up. It is always tough to play your cross-town rival. We have some things to work on, but hopefully this will make us better as we resume Conference USA play this weekend."
Tulane was 15-of-25 from the floor in the second half (60.0 percent), but UNO negated that advantage by hitting 23-of-29 free throws in the second stanza. The Privateers also outrebounded Tulane 39-33.
The Green Wave return to action this weekend, traveling to Conference USA rivals Memphis and Saint Louis. The Wave will meet Memphis on Friday before facing Saint Louis on Sunday.
