Women's Basketball Cruises Past Alabama State

The Tulane women's basketball team held Alabama State scoreless for more than 11 minutes in the second half, as the Green Wave cruised to a 70-57 win over the Hornets at Fogelman Arena on Thursday.
With the win, Tulane improves to 3-1 overall, while Alabama State falls to 1-4 with the loss. Tulane also moved to 8-1 all-time in home openers under head coach Lisa Stockton. Through four games this season, no Tulane opponent has scored more than 57 points.
Teana McKiver led Tulane with 19 points, while also adding six rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals. Delacey Jospeh came off the bench to score 10 points as the Green Wave reserves outscored their Alabama State counterparts 25-8.
"Our defense was much better in the second half, and we really got a lift from our bench for the second game in a row" Stockton said. "We did a better job of getting our post players in a position to score in the second half."
Tulane led by as many as nine in the first half, but Alabama State rallied to take a three-point lead, 32-29, into the locker room. The Hornets led 34-31 at the 18:48 mark of the second half, before Tulane scored 22 straight points to build a 53-34 cushion with 8:06 left. Alabama State fought back to within nine, 57-48 with 3:58 left, but Tulane scored nine straight to push the margin back to 18 with 2:16 left.
The Green Wave held Alabama State to just 28.1 percent shooting (9-of-32) in the second half, including a 1-of-10 showing from behind the three-point line. The Hornets were just 3-of-17 (17.6) from behind the arc for the game. Tulane also had a 40-34 edge in rebounding and forced 23 Alabama State turnovers. Tulane was 14-of-27 from the floor (51.9 percent) in the second half.
Gwen Slaughter and Muci Haris each had nine points for the Green Wave, with Slaughter also pulling down nine rebounds and chipping in two blocks and two steals. Tiffany Wilson led Tulane with four assists off the bench, while also adding a block and a steal without committing a turnover. As a team Tulane had nine blocked shots.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday as the Green Wave welcome No. 13 Louisiana Tech to the New Orleans Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
