NEW ORLEANS, La. - - Gwen Slaughter and Tiffany Wilson each had 10 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the Tulane University women's basketball team dropped a 76-50 decision to Cincinnati Friday evening in Conference USA action at Fogelman Arena.
The Green Wave defense held Cincy's Valerie King, C-USA's third leading scorer and the 14th leading scorer in the nation with a 20.3 points per game, to six points, but the Bearcats connected on 48.3 percent of their shots as a team en route to the victory. With the loss, Tulane falls to 15-8 overall and 3-5 in C-USA play. Cincinnati, meanwhile, improves to 16-4 on the year and 5-3 in league action.
Tulane scored the first points of the night when Wilson hit a layup 13 seconds into the game, but that would be the only lead of the night for the home team as Cincinnati would respond with a 19-4 run to take a 13-point lead with 9:55 to play in the first half.
Trailing 30-20 with 3:23 to play in the first half, the Green Wave went on a 7-2 run to end the stanza and cut the lead to five at the break. That would be as close as Tulane would get the rest of the way, though, as Cincinnati scored the first two baskets of the second half, and would take a 10-point advantage at 39-29 with 18:39 to play in the contest.
Tulane would cut the lead to eight on four occasions, but with 11:54 to play, Cincinnati held Tulane to just three points over the next 5:30 to put the game away. The Bearcats led 48-40, but used a 16-3 burst to build a commanding 64-43 lead with 6:34 to play.
Cincinnati only outrebounded the Green Wave by six, 38-32, but 17 caroms came off the offensive glass which translated into 24 second-chance points.
The Bearcats' Carolyn Alexander led all players with 19 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Debbie Merrill added 16 points for UC.
Freshman Tymeka Moore had a career high four assists for Tulane, while Slaughter added two assists and two blocks.
The Green Wave return to action on Sunday, as Tulane plays host to C-USA rival Louisville at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
