NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
Teana McKiver nearly had a triple-double, registering 18 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocked shots to lead the Tulane women's basketball team to a 65-57 win over Conference USA rival Charlotte at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
The win was Tulane's third straight and fourth in the last five games, improving the Green Wave to 19-9 overall and 7-6 in C-USA play. Charlotte, coached by former Tulane assistant coach Katie Meier, lost for the first time in five games to fall to 15-11 and 7-6 in league action.
Tulane led by as many as 15 early in the second half before Charlotte used an 18-5 run to cut the advantage to just two, 44-42, with 9:34 left. The teams traded points before a three-point play from Tiffany Wilson and a lay-up from McKiver, thanks to a Wilson assist, gave the Wave a seven-point cushion with 6:36 left. Tulane pushed the lead to nine, 58-49, with 3:27 left before the 49ers scored eight straight to time the lead to just one with a minute remaining. From there, however, Tulane hit seven of eight free throw attempts and held the 49ers scoreless to claim the eight-point victory.
"This is obviously a big win for us," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Teana (McKiver) was absolutely sensational on both ends of the floor. And it seemed like whenever we need a big shot, Kelly Nadeau knocked one down."
McKiver posted her sixth double-double of the year, finishing just two blocked shots shy of the second triple double in school history. She also added two assists and three steals without committing a turnover in 34 minutes of action. Sophomore Kelly Nadeau also added 18 points, a season high, scoring 14 of those after halftime to go along with two assists and two steals.
Sarah Goree, who was honored before the game for scoring her 1,000th career point last weekend, chipped in 13 points and four assists. She now has 1,025 points to rank 13th on the all-time scoring lists. She also has 393 career assists. With seven more, she will become the first player in Tulane history to record 1,000 career points and 400 career assists.
Tulane looked poised to break the game open in the first half, but Charlotte stayed close thanks to the three-point shot. The 49ers had just four first-half field goals but all were from behind the arc. Tulane led 14-6 midway through the first half, but Charlotte sandwiched two three-pointers around a McKiver lay-up to cut the margin to just four with 6:42 left. From there, however, Tulane held the 49ers without a field goal and used a 12-4 burst to take a 28-16 lead into the locker room.
Peaches Harris scored 24 points for Charlotte, while Alicia Abernathy added 22, but the rest of the 49ers combined for just 11 points on 3-of-20 shooting.
Tulane held the 49ers to just 14.3 percent shooting in the first half (4-of-28) and just 27.6 percent for the game (16-of-58). The Wave were 24-of-56 from the floor (42.9 percent) and held a 42-37 edge in rebounds. Behind McKiver's eight rejections, Tulane blocked a season-high 10 shots while grabbing 13 steals. It marked the fifth straight game that the Wave had recorded as many thefts.
Tulane will close out the regular season on Sunday against Conference USA newcomer East Carolina. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
