NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University baseball team will look to extend its winning streak against Louisiana teams to 16 games Wednesday night when the Green Wave travels to Hammond to take on the Lions of Southeastern Louisiana at Alumni Field.
Tulane, whose last loss to a Louisiana foe came during the 2000 season, is looking to continue the momentum the Green Wave gained after defeating LSU in Baton Rouge last Tuesday night and taking two of three games from nationally-ranked Rutgers over the weekend. The Green Wave will not have it easy on Wednesday, however, as the Lions have one of their best teams in recent history.
"We have a tough week ahead of us," head coach Rick Jones said. "Southeastern Louisiana is probably playing as good of baseball as they've played in a long time. They're really good. And then this weekend, we open conference play with Charlotte this weekend and they feature the returning Conference USA Pitcher of the Year. So it'll be a very challenging week."
The Green Wave come into the Southeastern Game 11-6 on the year and winners of three of their last four contests. As a team, Tulane is hitting .312 and has tallied a .455 slugging percentage with 34 doubles, five triples and 15 home runs. Senior infielder James Jurries leads the team in several categories with a .456 batting average, a .809 slugging percentage, four home runs and three triples.
Sophomore middle infielder Turner Brumby is second on the club in hitting with a .356 batting average, and sophomore first baseman/left-handed pitcher Michael Aubrey paces the squad with 20 RBI and is second in home runs (3) and slugging percentage (.574).
Southeastern, meanwhile, enters Wednesday night's matchup 10-7 on the year and looking to put a three-game skid against the Crimson Tide of Alabama this weekend in their rearview mirror. As a team, SLU is hitting .282 and has a .415 slugging percentage. Blaine Wyninger leads the Lions with a .429 batting average and paces the squad with a .629 slugging percentage. Anthony Krajancic leads Southeastern with four home runs and 18 RBI while Rhett Buras is close behind with three round trippers and 17 runs batted in.
As the Green Wave has done all season, Tulane will send Aubrey to the mound to face the Lions in midweek competition. Aubrey comes into the game 2-0 on the year with a 6.27 ERA. He's appeared in four games, three as a starter, and has won his last two starts with a 7-4 decision at Nicholls State and last Tuesday night's 6-5 victory at LSU.
After Wednesday's game, Tulane returns to action on Friday night at Turchin Stadium when the Green Wave opens Conference USA play against league foe Charlotte at 6:30 p.m. The two teams will play again on Saturday at 2 p.m., and close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
