NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University sophomore pitcher/first baseman Michael Aubrey was one of 19 college player extended invitations to try out for the 2002 National Team, USA Baseball announced today from its office in Tuscon, Ariz.
Aubrey, who is currently hitting .333 and leads Conference USA with eight victories from the mound, will join fellow C-USA player Brad Sullivan of Houston and LSU's Aaron Hill at the tryout. He will also be making his third trip to the Team USA auditions after making the National Team last season as a college freshman and earning a spot on the Junior National Team as a high school senior.
"It's certainly an honor and I'm looking forward to playing with the guys that are back from last year as well as some of the new guys," Aubrey said. "It's a neat way to be able to travel and see the world, while at the same time, you get to do something you love."
Through 43 games in 2002, Aubrey is 57-for-171 with a team leading 12 doubles while also tallying four home runs, two doubles and 41 RBI. On the hill, Aubrey is 8-1 with a 4.45 ERA while totaling 36 strikeouts and 18 walks in 60.2 innings of work.
Last season with the U.S. National Team, Aubrey hit .233 with two home runs, two doubles, a triple and eight RBI. He also pitched 1.0 inning of scoreless baseball as the team finished 21-7-1. After his senior year at Southwood High, Aubrey joined the Junior National Team where he helped the squad win the silver medal at the IBA Worlds Junior Championships in Edmonton, Canada.
A preseason All-America selection and preseason C-USA Player of the Year, Aubrey has helped the Green Wave to a 25-18 record, including wins in their last five games. In the last 10 games, Aubrey has been on a tear with a .488 batting average, five doubles, a triple, one home run and 15 RBI. For the year, he has 20 multiple-hit games and 10 multiple-RBI contests. Aubrey is also currently riding the wake of an 11-game hitting streak that dates back to Tulane's win at Memphis on April 6.
Aubrey and the Green Wave return to action on Friday, April 26 when they travel to Ohio to take on Conference USA foe Cincinnati at 5 p.m. at Johnny Bench Field. Tulane and the Bearcats play again on Saturday at 11 a.m. and close out the series on Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
