NEW ORLEANS, La. - After helping power the Tulane University baseball team to a 2-1 series win at South Florida, senior infielder James Jurries was named C-USA Player of the Week for his stellar performance against the Bulls, the league office announced on Monday.
For the week, Jurries hit .636 (7-for-11) with a 1.273 slugging percentage on the strength of a double and two home runs. He also scored five runs, stole a base and drove in seven runs to help Tulane improve to 30-23 and claim sole possession of sixth place in the league standings with one week left in the regular season.
Jurries tallied multiple-hit games in all three contests, including a 3-for-4 showing on Sunday when he crushed a pair of two-run homers and had five RBI in the Green Wave's 9-8 victory. He also drove in two runs and scored a pair of his own in Friday night's 15-5 win over the Bulls.
For the season, the native of Lake Jackson, Texas, leads the team in several categories, including batting average (.411), slugging percentage (.802), home runs (19) and RBI (64). Jurries also paces the club in runs (68), doubles (tied with 14), triples (4), total bases (162), walks (38) and on-base percentage (.502) while ranking second on the squad with 21 stolen bases. At his current pace, Jurries would become Tulane's first .400 hitter since 1985.
In addition to leading Tulane, Jurries also leads the conference in slugging percentage, runs scored, RBI, home runs and total bases while ranking second in on-base percentage, third in batting average, hits, triples and walks, and fourth in stolen bases.
Big offensive numbers have been a constant for Jurries throughout his collegiate career, and he ranks high on several career lists at Tulane. With at least five games left in his college career - three this week against Southern Miss and a minimum of two next week at the C-USA Tournament - Jurries ranks second in home runs (61) and total bases (600), third in runs scored (275), fourth in hits (331), RBI (247), doubles (64), triples (tied with 11) and at-bats (915), sixth in stolen bases (71) and seventh in walks (140). He will rank as one of Tulane's finest hitters and sluggers of all time when he completes his collegiate career.
Jurries and the Green Wave return to action on Thusday, May 16, when Tulane plays host to C-USA rival Southern Miss beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Turchin Stadium. Tulane and the Golden Eagles will also play on Friday at 6:30 p.m. before closing out the series on Saturday with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. Prior to Saturday's contest, Jurries and his senior class teammates will be honored with a special ceremony.
