NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
Teana McKiver had 14 points to lead a balanced scoring effort as the Tulane women's basketball team cruised to an 81-59 win over cross-town rival UNO at Fogelman Arena on Monday.
Tulane won its second straight to improve to 10-4 overall. It was the final non-conference tune-up for the Green Wave. UNO lost for the second time in three games to drop to 5-9 overall.
After taking a 35-30 lead into the locker room, Tulane turned up the intensity to start the second half. The Wave outscored the Privateers 19-6 to start the second frame and held UNO without a field goal for the first 4:34 of the second stanza en route to a 54-36 lead at the 14:01 mark. UNO rallied to within 12 with 11:32 left, but Tulane answered with a 23-8 burst to push the lead to 27, 81-54, with just 1:42 left.
"It was a very physical game, but I thought we did a better job of being more aggressive on offense in the second half," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We wanted to set the tempo and I think we were able to do that. I think the team also responded in the right way after their intential foul."
The game saw 46 fouls called, including an intentional foul on UNO's LaToya Clark and a technical foul on the Privateers' Jeannetter Jiminez in the second half.
Tulane hit 63.6 percent of their shots in the second half (14-of-22) and scored 30 points off 26 UNO turnovers. The Wave had a 34-25 edge in rebounding, recorded nine blocks and had a 34-12 margin in bench points. Tulane was also 5-of-8 from behind the three-point line (62.5 percent), while holding UNO to just 4-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc (28.6 percent).
McKiver led Tulane with 14 points, while adding seven rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Lakethia Hampton scored 12 points for the second straight game, to go along with six rebounds and a career-high four steals. Muci Haris and Britt Themann each added 11 points, while Gwen Slaughter had five blocked shots.
UNO had a 24-21 lead with 7:32 left in the first half, but Britt Themann hit a pair of free throws to start a 10-0 run that gave Tulane the lead for good. Delacey Joseph hit back-to-back jumpers before D'Aundra Henry and Lakethia Hampton added fast-break lay-ups to build a 31-24 lead at the 5:27 mark. The Wave pushed the lead to as many as nine, on a lay-up from Hampton, before taking a five-point lead into the break.
The Green Wave return to action on Friday, playing host to league rival Saint Louis at Fogelman Arena.
