The Tulane women's basketball team used a 12-0 run midway through the second half to post a 74-62 win over Yale in the consolation game of the Tulane/DoubleTree Classic at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
With the win, Tulane improves to 5-5 overall, while Yale drops to 0-7 with the loss.
Tulane had a 50-49 lead at the 10:13 mark before the Green Wave reeled off 12 consecutive points, capped by an old fashioned three-point play from Delacey Joseph. Yale rallied to within eight, 65-57, with 3:39 left, but Tulane held off the Bulldogs to claim the 12-point victory.
Senior Kelly Nadeau led the Green Wave with 20 points on 6-of-13 shooting. She hit four three-pointers and added three assists. Joseph, behind a 6-of-7 performance from the free throw line, had 17 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Tulane led by as many as 15 in the first half before Yale made a late charge to trim the deficit to just one at the break. The Wave had a 30-15 advantage at the 9:18 mark, but the Bulldogs scored 10 straight points to cut the Wave's cushion to just five, 30-25, at the 4:21 mark. Tulane answered with a jumper to push its lead back to seven, but Yale followed with a three-pointer en route to a 37-36 Tulane lead at the break.
Christina Phillips led Yale with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Brynn Gingras added 10 points, five assists and four steals.
Tulane had a 43-32 edge in rebounding and limited the Bulldogs to just four offensive rebounds. The Wave also forced 23 Yale turnovers and converted those into 26 points.
San Jose State won the 2003 DoubleTree Classic with a 59-49 win over Marist in the championship game. SJSU's Cricket Williams was selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Tatiana Taylor. Marist's Steph Del Preore and Maureen Magarity were also named to the all-tournament squad, as was Tulane's Kelly Nadeau and Yale's Christina Phillips.
Tulane returns to action on Tuesday, as the Green Wave play host to LSU at the New Orleans Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
