NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
Marquette 59, Tulane 47 - Final Box Score
Marquette used a strong defense and some clutch shots in the second half to post a 59-47 win over the Tulane women's basketball team at Fogelman Arena on Friday.
With the loss, Tulane falls to 14-6 overall and 5-2 in Conference USA play. Marquette, who has the best road record in C-USA, improved to 12-8 overall and 4-4 in league action. The Golden Eagles are now 7-2 in road games this year.
Tulane took a 24-19 lead into the locker room, but Marquette fought back to take a 30-28 lead with 13:31 left in the second half. The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to seven, 38-31 with 10:58 remaining, but Tulane rallied to tie the game at 41-41 at the 7:29 mark. But from there, Marquette turned up the defensive intensity and outscored the Wave 18-6 to claim the 12-point victory.
"I don't think you can pinpoint one thing about tonight's game," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Turnovers, lack of defensive discipline, missed free throws - they all contributed to our losing the game. Plus, you have to give Marquette credit. They hit some big shots in the second half."
Tulane came out firing on all cylinders in the first half and led 21-11 at the 9:55 mark. But the Wave offense went cold and Marquette used an 8-1 burst to cut the lead to just three before a Tiffany Wilson jumper put the Wave up by five at the break.
"We came out very crisp and very focused, especially in the first six minutes," Stockton added. "But for some reason, we lost it and couldn't get it back. We have to learn from this and get ready to play DePaul on Sunday."
Delacey Joseph led Tulane with 13 points and four rebounds, while Gwen Slaughter had her second straight double-double and fifth in the last six games with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Slaughter also reached a milestone early in the game when she scored her 1,000th career point, becoming just the 16th player in school history to reach the mark. Facing constant double and triple-teaming, Teana McKiver had just four points, but pulled down 12 rebounds, blocked five shots and had four steals.
Katie Alsdurf led Marquette with 16 points, thanks to a 3-of-4 performance from behind the three-point line. She also added six steals. Katie O'Grady had 13 points off the bench for the Golden Eagles.
Tulane had a 45-30 edge in rebounding, but couldn't overcome 27 turnovers, which led to 31 Marquette points. The Golden Eagles were 5-of-9 from behind the three-point line (55.6 percent) in the second half and were 14-of-16 from the free throw line (87.5 percent) for the game.
Tulane returns to action on Sunday, as the Green Wave play host to C-USA rival DePaul at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
