NEW ORLEANS, La. - -
DePaul 69, Tulane 50 - Box Score
DePaul outscored the Tulane women's basketball team 24-6 over the final 10 minutes of the first half en route to a 69-50 win over the Green Wave at Fogelman Arena on Sunday.
Tulane lost for the second straight game to fall to 14-7 overall and 6-3 in Conference USA play. DePaul improved to 17-7 and 6-3 in league action.
The teams traded points early in the first half and the score was tied at 11-11 with 10:01 left to play thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play from Tulane's Britt Themann. However, DePaul reeled off nine straight points to build a 20-11 cushion and never trailed again. The Green Wave got back to within seven on two occasions, but with DePaul leading 25-17 with 3:43 left, the Blue Demons closed the half with a 10-0 run to take a 35-17 lead into the locker room.
Tulane fought back in the second half, cutting the lead to 13 with 8:59 left on a pair of Delacey Joseph free throws. But DePaul answered with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to push the lead back to 18 at the 6:47 mark. A free throw from Teana McKiver trimmed the margin to just 17, but DePaul pushed the margin to 21 with 5:17 left. The Wave mounted one final charge, using a pair of McKiver lay-ups and a Themann three-pointer to cut the lead to 14 with 3:00 remaining, but DePaul answered with seven straight points of its own to restore the 21-point cushion before claiming the 69-50 victory.
"I thought we really fought hard in the second half," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "At times we had to gamble, and as a result, we gave up some open shots, but we fought really hard. DePaul just got us when we were down. They played a very good game and were very aggressive going to the boards. We just have to re-group."
Joseph led Tulane in scoring for the second straight game and for the fourth time in the last five contests with 14 points. She also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. McKiver was the only other player in double-figures for Tulane, chipping in 11 points and six rebounds. Gwen Slaughter, who had posted a double-double in five of the last six games, had nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Khara Smith led DePaul with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while adding five assists, two blocks and two steals. Charlene Smith added 13 points, Jenni Dant chipped in 12 and Ashley Luke scored 11 for the Blue Demons.
DePaul had a 42-25 edge in rebounding had a 30-10 margin in bench points. The Blue Demons were 7-of-14 from behind the arc, while Tulane was just 3-of-9, including an 0-of-4 showing from behind the arc in the first half.
Tulane returns to action next weekend, as the Green Wave travel to face Conference USA rivals South Florida and UAB.
