NEW ORLEANS, La. - Former Georgia Tech standout and Academic All-American Matthew Boggs has joined the Tulane University baseball staff as the team's third assistant, head coach Rick Jones announced Friday.
Boggs, who spent the 2003 season as an assistant at Georgia Southern where he primarily worked with the catchers, will be responsible for the Green Wave outfielders, assist with hitters and coach first base. Boggs replaces former Tulane All-American Brandon Belanger who left the program to pursue job opportunities in the private sector.
"I'm excited to add someone like Matthew Boggs to our coaching staff," Jones said. "He is a coach who I feel will really be able to relate to our players since he comes from a very similar situation - an academic university in the South with a very good baseball program.
"Matthew has been around successful programs at Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern, and we feel that his experience as a player and knowledge of the game is really going to help us. I really feel that he has a chance to become one of what is becoming a trend of assistant coaches at Tulane that go on to become Division I head coaches."
A four-year starter at Georgia Tech from 1998-2002 (he received a medical redshirt in 2000), Boggs was a noted leadoff hitter and notched a career on-base percentage of .463. Noted for an exceptional eye at the plate, Boggs tallied 135 walks while striking out just 98 times in 772 career at-bats. He was also a versatile student-athlete, seeing time at second and third base, as well as the outfield.
Hitting better than .300 in each of his four seasons in Atlanta, Boggs saved his best for last as he hit .363 with a career-best 12 doubles, two triples and 43 RBI in 2002 in helping Georgia Tech advance to the College World Series. Voted team captain as a junior and senior, he finished his career with a .337 batting average with 32 doubles, 110 RBI and 41 stolen bases.
A standout off the field as well, Boggs was a four-time ACC Honor Roll student, claimed Verizon District III Academic All-America honors in 1999, 2001 and 2002, and as a senior, claimed national second-team Academic All-American recognition. He completed his bachelor's degree in textile and fiber engineering in 2001, and worked on his master's degree during his final season of eligibility.
Boggs becomes the second former Georgia Southern assistant to join the Green Wave staff, joining Sean Teague who was announced as the team's pitching coach last week. He also gives Tulane the rare advantage of having an entire coaching staff that has either played or coached in a College World Series.
"I'm excited about being here," Boggs said. "This is a great opportunity for me and I look forward to learning from Coach Jones. He's been a great coach and is one of the most respected people in all of college baseball. I also look forward to a continued relationship with Coach Teague as well as working with Mark Kingston."
