WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior Shelly Cayette scored a career-high 12 points and the Green Wave cut a 15-point second-half deficit to five points before falling to Howard 67-59 in the 2004-05 season opener Friday night in Washington, D.C.
Tulane falls to 0-1 on the season and will face George Mason Sunday at 1 p.m. (CST) in Fairfax, Va. Howard improves to 1-0 on the young season.
The Green Wave shot 51 percent (26-51) from the field in the game, 59 percent in the first half, but committed 39 turnovers, including 25 in the first half, in falling to the Lady Bison. Cayette scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half, including the final field goal of the game for the Green Wave with 3:03 left to pull Tulane within five at 64-59.
But Tulane could pull no closer and Howard's Simone Agee hit three-of-four free throws in the final 27 seconds to claim the win.
"Obviously it was a game where our turnovers were the key," said Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton. "I thought we played like a very young basketball team tonight. There were moments that we just didn't hold our composure. We're 10 freshmen and sophomores out of 14 players right now, and we have to mature.
"We probably had 20 turnovers that we can attribute to traveling and not catching the pass. It's a matter of relaxing and playing fundamental basketball. Take out the missed passes, the travels, the charges and it's not even a game. They have such a desire to win, they just have to learn how."
Agee finished with 14 points and eight rebounds while Brittany James scored 17 to lead the Lady Bison. Daisha Hicks added 11 points and seven assists for Howard. Andrea Jones led HU with 10 rebounds.
Cayette was the only Green Wave player in double figures and she tied for team-high honors with seven rebounds. Senior Tymeka Moore also added seven rebounds for Tulane. Jami Montagnino had eight points and five rebounds.
"Shelly was a great spark for us," Stockton said. "I thought she played like a veteran and did exactly what we needed her to do. I'm also very happy with Tymeka Moore. She gave us a solid performance and did what she needed to do. Her leadership is key for the season. Kinya Lennix also gave us some good minutes in the second half."
Tulane trailed by seven, 37-30, at the half and Howard extended the lead to 54-39 with just over 14 minutes left in the game on a . Trailing by 14, 59-45, with 10:29 on the clock, Tulane went on a 11-2 run to cut the deficit to five, 61-56, with 4:43 remaining. Howard helped as the Lady Bison went just five-of-20 from the free throw line in the game.
Howard used a 17-4 run midway through the first half to take a 29-14 lead after Tulane had claimed what would be its last lead of the game, 14-12, on a jumper by D'Aundra Henry.
