NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University pulled away in the second half for a 70-53 exhibition women's basketball victory over the Houston Jaguars on Sunday afternoon at Fogelman Arena.
Freshman Dominique Philpots led the Green Wave with 15 points and seven rebounds in her debut, while junior D'Aundra Henry added 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
The Jaguars knotted the game at 33 on a Latasha Moore fast-break layup with 14:32 to go, but Philpots and Henry keyed a 19-2 run to make it 52-35 with 8:01 to go. Philpots scored seven and Henry added four during the run. Houston cut its deficit to 10 on a Melissa Abraham jumper, but Tulane recouped and built the lead to as many as 21 late in the game.
"It was really good for us," Tulane coach Lisa Stockton said. "It showed us the things that we need to address. In the first half, I thought we had the jitters, we were nervous. In the second half, our defense took over. We do need to cut down on the turnovers."
While Tulane turned the ball over 22 times, it made up for it by forcing 31 turnovers. The key was points off turnovers however, as the Green Wave outscored Houston, 38-16, in that category.
The Jaguars scored 28 points in the paint, to Tulane's 24. The Green Wave had 27 points off the bench as 10 different players scored.
"We had so many young players in the post that we gave up a lot of points in the paint," Stockton said. "But overall, for a first exhibition, our shooting percentage was good, free throw percentage was good."
Tulane shot 44.6 percent (25-of-56) from the field, while holding the Houston to 34.5 percent (19-of-55) shooting. The Green Wave connected on 16-of-23 free throws and held a slim 37-36 advantage on the boards.
"I thought we had great performances by some of our players," Stockton said. "D'Aundra Henry at times put on a show and Dominique Philpots had an impressive debut."
Redshirt freshman Courtney Simmons came off the bench to score 11 points while sophomore Jami Montagnino added 10 points and a game-high seven steals.
Tulane returns to action on Thursday evening, hosting local rival Xavier at 7 p.m. at Fogelman Arena. Tickets for that game and all single games, as well as season tickets are available by calling 504-861-WAVE.
