NEW ORLEANS, La. - For the second straight game, the Tulane women's basketball team forced over 20 turnovers, and the Green Wave won its sixth game of the season, 68-57 over Portland on Tuesday night at Fogelman Arena. Senior Lakethia Hampton scored a game-high 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds as the Wave moved to 6-4 on the season.
D'Aundra Henry scored the Wave's first five points by hitting a three at the 18:20 mark, then going in for a lay-up after picking the pocket of Whitney Grant for her first of five steals on the night. Henry and Tulane continued to swipe the ball from the Pilots, as the Wave collected 13 steals on the night.
Tulane held a 46-32 rebounding edge over the Pilots, as the Green Wave turned 20 offensive rebounds into 17 points. Hampton and Tymeka Moore each grabbed nine boards to lead the Wave.
"Our offensive boards were something we were focused on," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Rebounding has been something we've wanted to address. We also wanted to force 23 turnovers and we ended up with 24. Defensive intensity won the game for us."
A Courtney Simmons three-pointer with 12:18 left in the first gave Tulane a 15-12 lead, and the Wave never looked back. Just before the break, Hampton found Jami Montagnino for a lay-up which was followed by a Simmons steal and lay-up to give the Wave a 32-25 lead going into the locker room.
Another Portland turnover resulted in a three-point play from Montagnino that extended the lead to 15 for Tulane with 12:49 remaining. Portland got to within five with 1:23 remaining, but a lay-up by Henry and free throws from Montagnino and Hampton with under a minute left secured the win.
Henry turned in a solid all-around performance, ending the night with 14 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals. Montagnino also chipped in 10 points for the Wave.
Portland (4-7) was led in scoring and rebounding by Ashlee Orndorff, who collected 14 points and nine rebounds.
