NEW ORLEANS, La. - Well, I think all will agree that this has been a very eventful week to say the least. The same weather that kept us off the field for the majority of this week's practices kept us off the field for Friday and Saturday's games. With all the inconveniences and, sometimes, frustrations that spawned from this weekend's weather, I think players and fans alike would say that Sunday's victories made the wait worthwhile. I know it did for me.
As a team, we all knew that this past weekend would be one full of tarp pulls and building anticipation. To me, with the batting practices and warm-ups that only lead to postponed games, it always felt like we were only speeding up to slow down. Thankfully, though, Sunday came, and the Wave pulled off a sweep of a very solid UT-Arlington baseball team. I was very pleased to see the way the team adjusted to all the sitting around and letdowns that took place on Friday and Saturday. I think we played hard as a team and took advantage of a lot of run-scoring situations, which is always a good thing.
The bats definitely came to life on Sunday. We had many multiple-run innings and scored a lot of runs with two outs, a common characteristic of good-hitting baseball teams. Our pitching picked up where it left off last year. We got two solid starts from Billy Mohl and J.R. Crowel, as well some great performances from two freshmen, Chris Worster and Daniel Latham, making their first appearances in Green Wave uniforms. All in all, it was a very productive weekend at Turchin Stadium.
Next, we set out to play UNO, our cross-town rivals on the lakefront. I hope the conditions are nothing like last year's game with UNO on the lakefront. Just imagine the worst baseball conditions with light rain, gusting winds and chilling weather. Multiply that by 10, and you'll start to get a glimpse of what it was like. So, it's going to be interesting to see how the team responds after this weekend's events. We're mainly going to focus on playing our game, which is playing hard, and let the rest take care of itself. It should be a fun game leading up to next weekend's three game set with the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on Mardi Gras weekend.
Well Wave fans, that's all I have time for this week. I'm sorry I can't include more in this week's column but I have about 4 exams and a presentation coming up tomorrow and Tuesday. So, I hope you all can see where my time is needed, and understand the reason for my abbreviated post. I promise that I'll make it up next week. Until then, have a good one and I'll see you at the ballpark
Roll Wave,
Tommy
