NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University baseball standout Matt Barket was named 2004 Newcomer of the Year, and seven Green Wave student-athletes claimed All-Louisiana honors, the Louisiana Sports Writers Association announced Saturday.
Barket, a junior outfielder from Miami, Fla., claimed newcomer honors after transferring to the Green Wave program from the University of Miami and leading the team with a .370 batting average, 13 stolen bases and a .450 on-base percentage. He is joined by Tulane teammates J.R. Crowel (So., LHP), Greg Dini (Jr., C) and Brian Bogusevic (So., Utility).
In addition, junior shortstop Tommy Manzella was named second-team all-state, and pitchers Cory Hahn (Sr., RHP) and Daniel Latham (Fr., RHP) claimed honorable-mention recognition from the LSWA.

Dini paced the squad with 11 home runs and a .575 slugging percentage while ranking second on the team with 17 doubles and third in batting average with a .355 average.

At the plate, he led Tulane with 68 RBI and four triples while ranking second in home runs (10) and fourth in batting average (.339 ) and doubles (14). On the rubber, he paced the staff in wins (tied with nine), innings pitched (111.2) and strikeouts (89).
Manzella, an honorable-mention selection a year ago, hit .311 as a junior and ranked second on the club with 11 stolen bases while chipping in with 14 doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI. Hahn tied with Bogusevic for the team lead in wins, and Latham paced the club in saves with six.
LSU claimed three of the individual honors as Jon Zeringue was named Player of the Year, rookie southpaw Clay Dirks claimed Freshman of the Year honors and Raymond "Smoke" Laval was named Coach of the Year. UNO flamethrower Thomas Diamond, meanwhile, was named Pitcher of the Year.
The LSWA baseball team is voted on by members of the state media as well as the respective universities' baseball media relations contacts. The top two vote getters at their positions are named first- and second-team, respectively, and a player must average at least ? a vote per ballot to earn honorable-mention recognition.
