NEW ORLEANS, La. - Despite 11 points from Courtney Simmons off of the bench and 10 from Jami Montagnino, the Tulane women's basketball team fell to No. 17 DePaul, 80-50, in Conference USA action Friday night at Fogelman Arena.
DePaul (14-3, 3-1 Conference USA) built a lead early in the first half on a 20-5 run. Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year Khara Smith provided 14 points and 11 rebounds during the first period for the Blue Demons, who shot 55.9 percent from the field in opening stanza. Senior guard Natalie Walsh came off the Tulane bench to hit two three-pointers before the end of the half as the Green Wave headed to the locker room trailing 45-23.
"DePaul's transition offense really put us on the ropes early," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "We just couldn't hit our shots in the first half. I thought we had a lot better shot selection in the second half."
After shooting just 28.1 percent during the first, Tulane (8-10, 0-5) hit 9-of-23 shots in the second for 39.1 percent. Simmons and Montagnino combined for 16 of the Green Wave's 27 second-half points.
The hot shooting continued for DePaul as the Demons went 16-for-32 from the floor in the second and ended the game shooting 53.0 percent. The Blue Demons placed five players in double-figures. Jenna Rubino paced the Demons with 18 points while Khara Smith posted her 12th double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Allie Quigley tossed in 12, while Caprice Smith and Erin Carney contributed 11 and 10, respectively.
Simmons and Montagnino led Tulane with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Lakethia Hampton added nine and Walsh ended the night with six. The Green Wave bench outscored the DePaul bench, 27-18.
