HOUSTON, Texas - Three Green Wave players posted a double-double but it was not enough as the Tulane University volleyball team dropped a hard-fought four-game match to Conference USA foe Houston Friday night at the UH Athletics/Alumni Center.
After dropping the first game, 30-25, Tulane came back to tie things up with a 30-28 game-two victory. Houston claimed the third game, 30-26 and went on to put the Green Wave away with a 30-25 game-four win. With the loss, Tulane falls to 2-10 overall and 1-8 in C-USA play. Houston, meanwhile, improves to 12-9 on the year and 7-2 in league action.
"It is incredibly frustrating to be that close to a win and come up short again," first-year Tulane head coach Liz Kritza said. "Despite the result, we did put up a good fight and played some solid volleyball, but those highlights were too sporadic to sustain a win. Now we have to put this one behind us and push forward."
Rookie outside hitter Sara Radosevic led all players with 23 kills while senior right-side hitter Blair Moon added a career-high 18. Senior libero Kelli Dickson posted a match-best 21 digs while Radosevic and Moon filled out their double-double with 12 and 15 digs, respectively. Freshmen Lauren Boatwright, Jen Linder and Bridget Wells tallied eight kills apiece.
Freshman setter Luna Rebrovic, meanwhile, posted her fifth double-double of the season with 54 assists and a career-best 19 digs. Boatwright led the Green Wave with four blocks (one solo, three assists) while Radosevic, Moon and Linder had two assists each.
With the match knotted at one game apiece, the two teams traded blows early in game three. Tulane held a brief 13-12 lead midway through the contest, but the Cougars used a 4-0 run to take a 16-13 advantage they would not relinquish. Tulane cut the lead to one on six occasions the rest of the way, but with the Houston leading 26-25, the Cougars used a 4-1 run to end the game and shift momentum back to the home-team's bench.
Tulane got off to a rough start in game four, falling behind 10-6, but rallied back to tie the score at 13-all. From there, it appeared as if Houston regained control of the game with a 4-1 rally to take an 18-14 lead, but once again Tulane battled back to tie it up at 22s.
The two teams traded the next two points, but it was the Cougars who made the key run as Houston outscored Tulane 7-2 the rest of the way to clinch the match with a five-point decision.
Kariny Ritter was one of three Houston hitters with double-digit kill totals with 21, while Justine Farmer had 20 and Becca Sartori posted 13. Jennifer Hohl paced the Cougars with 18 digs, and the trio of Farmer, Jaci Gonzalez and Ritter had 17, 15 and 12, respectively.
The Green Wave return to action on Sunday, Oct. 30, when they take on C-USA foe Rice at 1 p.m. at Autry Court. Live stats for the match will be provided via GameTracker at the official website of Tulane Athletics, www.tulanegreenwave.com.
