LOUISVILLE, KY - The Tulane women's basketball team pulled to within four with just under 10 minutes left, but the Louisville defense kept the Wave at bay as the Cards defeated Tulane, 70-51, in Conference USA play Sunday at Freedom Hall.
Trailing by 11 heading into the second half, the Wave (10-16, 2-11) scored six points in just over one minute to pull to within five, 28-23. Louisville extended the lead to nine, but D'Aundra Henry hit a baseline jumper, drawing the foul and connecting on the and-one shot to trim the lead to four, 41-37. After Louisville (19-7, 10-3) took an eight-point lead, a Lakethia Hampton jumper followed by a Henry steal and layup brought cut the advantage to four with 9:56 left.
With the Wave in striking distance, the Louisville offense went on a 23-8 run, connecting on 11 free throws down the stretch, to end the game while the Cardinal defense gave Tulane fits, holding the Wave scoreless for seven and a half minutes.
The Wave kept things close the majority of the first, taking the lead, 13-12, on an 8-2 run highlighted by a Henry fast break. But the Cards went on a 16-4 run over the final eight minutes of the frame, to head to take a 28-17 lead into the intermission. For the half, the Green Wave hit just 25 percent of its shots.
"It was well-fought today, the kids really want it," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "Louisville is a tough team to come back against. We played really hard, it really takes a lot to get back into a game like this."
For the second straight game, the Wave struggled from the field, connecting on just 32.3 percent (12-of-30) from the field. On the other end of the floor, Louisville shot 63.2 percent in the second frame and 51.1 percent for the game.
"It all goes back to shooting percentage." Stockton added. "It is tough for the defense to hold up when the shots are not falling."
Hampton led Tulane with 16 points and eight rebounds while Henry added 14 points and five steals. Freshman Dominique Philpots came off of the bench for eight points and six rebounds, five of which came off of the offensive glass.
Yuliya Tokova led all scorers with 20 points while Cardinal sophomore Jazz Covington recorded her fourth consecutive double-double on 19 points and 10 boards.
The Wave plays its final regular-season contest on Saturday, Feb. 26, against Southern Miss at 2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 504-861-WAVE. The game will be broadcast live on the flagship radio station of Tulane women's basketball, WRBH 88.3 FM.
