HAMMOND, La. - Four Green Wave post players combined for 35 points, 23 rebounds and a pair of blocks - including a 14-point, four-rebound performance by sophomore forward Alendra Brown - as the Tulane University women's basketball team defeated Southeastern Louisiana, 69-62, Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
Tulane trailed 3-2 early on, but a basket by freshman point guard Ashley Langford 1:45 into the contest gave the Green Wave a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish the rest of the day. With the win, Tulane snaps a four-game losing skid to improve to 7-7 on the year. Southeastern Louisiana, meanwhile, falls to 5-11.
"We thought that would be our advantage today - our size inside," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton said. "I don't think we hit our posts when they were open all the time, and (Dominique) Philpots had a few shots that just rolled out. We felt like we needed to get the ball inside and score. We felt we had a size advantage with all four of our posts, so we wanted to get it in there."
Stockton juggled her starting lineup Saturday against the Lions as rookie guard Sasha Staidum and sophomore forward Dominique Philpots were on the court to open the contest for just the second time this season. The move paid off in spades for the Green Wave as Staidum had 11 points, five rebounds and three steals while Philpots chipped in with nine points, eight boards and two blocks.
Brown led four Tulane players with double-digit scoring totals with a career-best performance while Langford followed with 12, Staidum added 11 and sophomore forward Jennifer Sands dropped in 10. Sands tied Philpots for team-best rebounding honors with eight each, and Langford had for of the Green Wave's 13 assists.
Tulane led by as many as 11 on two occasions in the first half before the Lady Lions battled down the stretch to cut the advantage to 32-26 at halftime. The Green Wave scored the first three points of the second half, but Southeastern responded with an 8-0 run over the next two-plus minutes to make it a 35-34 ballgame.
From there, Tulane used a 5-0 run to push the lead back to six at 40-34 with 13:45 left to go. The Lions, however, refused to go away and trimmed the lead to three on three occasions, and a 3-pointer by Alejandra Iglesias made it 50-48 with 8:31 remaining in regulation.
The Green Wave defense tightened down and held Southeastern scoreless for nearly five minutes and the offense produced points on its next five trips down the court to make it an 11-point affair at 59-48 with 4:33 left to play. The lead hovered around 10 points for nearly the remainder of the ballgame, and a 3-pointer by SLU's Carmen Labat accounted for the final basket of the day.
Labat led three Southeastern players in double figures with a career-best 17 points off the bench while Kristy Carlin finish with 14 and Tina Wilson added 10. Jazmin Cain paced the Lady Lions with five rounds and three blocks, while Whitnee Miller had there of Southeastern's 12 assists.
