
Pepitone Named to USA Baseball National Team

NEW ORLEANS- Tulane right-handed relief pitcher Nick Pepitone has been selected to join the USA Baseball National Team, USA Baseball announced Wednesday night. Pepitone, who just completed his sophomore campaign for the Green Wave, was among the 22 members of the 2009 National Team. The National Team was selected after 10 days of trials that included eight intrasquad games and practices at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
Pepitone finished the 2009 college season with a 3.26 ERA having tossed 38.2 innings. While inducing 55 ground balls this season, he has also sent 42 batters back to the bench with strikeouts. Having made a team-high 22 appearances in relief, the Katy, Texas, native also tallied a team-high nine saves.
Joining Pepitone on the club will be college teammates Rob Segedin and Jeremy Schaffer, who will remain on the squad as alternates. The roster is also made up of shortstop and 2008 National Team member Christian Colon (Cal State Fullerton; Capey, Puerto Rico), and consists of five outfielders, six infielders, 10 pitchers, and one utility player, in addition to Segedin and Schaffer. The club is skippered by Tulane's head coach Rick Jones.
The USA Baseball National Team is comprised of the top non-draft-eligible college players in the United States. In 2009, the National Team will play in two international friendship series in North Carolina against the Canadian National Team and the Guatemalan National Team before heading to Japan for the 37th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Series and the World Baseball Challenge in Prince George, British Columbia, Canada.
