NEW ORLEANS- Following a stellar rookie season behind the dish, Jeremy Schaffer was named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday.
The honor is the third of the postseason for Schaffer, as he was named first-team All-Conference USA and claimed a spot on the C-USA All-Freshman Team as well. He becomes the 15th Tulane student-athlete to claim Freshman All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, with sophomore Rob Segedin garnering the distinction in 2008.
Schaffer played in all but two of the Green Wave's contests in 2009, including 49 starts behind the plate and eight as the club's designated hitter. He posted a .311 (66-212) average with 56 RBI and recorded a .566 slugging percentage, tacking on eight doubles and two triples in addition to his 14 home runs. Behind the dish, the Bellaire, Texas, native threw out 16 would-be base stealers. Schaffer is the first true freshman to handle the majority of the catching duties at Tulane since All-American Chad Sutter in 1996.
Schaffer finished his rookie season with 20 multiple-hit games and 16 multiple-RBI contests, including a 3-3, 3-RBI performance against UC Irvine in California on March 13 in addition to a 3-4 showing against Conference USA foe UCF in which he belted two home runs and finished the afternoon with 4 RBI. Schaffer had an 11-game hitting streak from March 20-April 5 when he hit .375 with 3 homers and 15 RBI.
He is one of four C-USA players to claim Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors, joining East Carolina pitcher Kevin Brandt, UCF catcher Beau Taylor and C-USA Freshman of the Year Anthony Rendon of Rice.
