Tulane Green Wave vs. East Carolina Pirates and Marshall Thundering Herd

Looking at the Green Wave
Tulane will look to collect a pair of wins this weekend as they will host East Carolina on Friday evening and Marshall on Saturday evening. The Green Wave dropped a tough four-setter at Southern Miss on Wednesday and fell 3-2 against UCF last Sunday after sweeping UTEP at Fogelman on Friday.
Cori Martone has been the steadiest performer for the Green Wave over the past three matches, recording 10 or more kills in each of those contests. The rookie had 15 kills against UTEP, 12 kills versus UCF and ten kills at Southern Miss. She posted a double-double, with 18 digs, and is averaging a double-double over her last three outings.
Milica Jovic and Izabela Grot are almost deadlocked at the top of the attacking charts this season, with Jovic holding a slight edge in the kill department with 221 to Grot's 220, and Grot having the edge in hitting percentage, .259 to .178. Mel Mandelbaum has handed out 717 assists this season, going along with 201 digs, and senior Amaris Genemaras paces the squad with 224 digs.
Tulane holds a perfect 9-0 mark against East Carolina in the series history, winning the first meeting with the Pirates 3-1 in 1998, and have dropped just one of their 29 total sets against ECU. The series edge is a tad slimmer versus Marshall, leading 3-2, since the series started in in 2005. The Olive and Blue lost two of their first three versus the Herd and enter Saturday's contest on a two game winning streak versus MU.
Scouting the Pirates
East Carolina enters with an overall record of 1-19, with a 0-8 mark in Conference USA play, and have dropped six of their last eight matches by a score of 0-3. Their lone win came over Binghamton on a neutral court and was one of just six matches that have gone four or more sets.
Britney Roper leads the Pirates attack with 138 kills and a .165 hitting percentage, as ECU is hitting just .089 this season as a team. Overall, they have just 618 kills to 943 for their opponents and overall the opponents are hitting .250 against their defense. Kasey Kavanaugh leads the team with 377 assists, while Nicole Jones (166 digs) and Marina Gusman-Brown (164) lead the team defensively.
Scouting the Thundering Herd
The Thundering Herd has lost each of their last four matches, pushing SMU to five sets last weekend at home. In conference play, Marshall owns a 3-5 overall mark, but is 0-3 in C-USA road matches this year.
Elizabeth Fleming tops the squad in assists per set (9.83) and double-doubles (8) this season, while she is closing in on 5,000 career assists (4,752) and 1,000 career digs (874). The Herd has three players over 200 digs this year, led by Laura Der (228), Katy Schad (226) and Dorothy Rahal (203). Der has also added 127 kills, while the team lead belongs to Elizabeth Herman with 286.
As a team, Marshall is attacking at a .205 clip and their opponents are hitting at a .222 mark. Their kills per-set are about even (12.8-12.4), while their service aces (1.1-1.1) and digs per-set (14.7-14.7) are dead even in 2010. Their opponents are averaging 2.3 blocks per-set and the Herd is averaging 1.8 blocks a set.
