PEARL, Miss. - It was a good ending to the season for the Tulane baseball team as they grabbed a 7-1 win over Houston to close out their stay at the Conference USA Championships presented by Trustmark. The Green Wave used a five-run sixth inning to grab the momentum and Alex Byo tossed seven innings and allowed just an unearned run to guide the Green Wave to a victory.
"Bowen gave us a big lift with his RBI double and Alex (Byo) settled in and pitched really well," said Tulane head coach Rick Jones. "We played really well defensively today. Garrett Cannizaro played really well in the field. We put together some good at-bats and Andrew Garner threw well in relief. It was great to see Roby (Broach) come in and get that final out, too."
The two teams traded runs in the third inning, with Tulane grabbing the early lead against Houston (27-31) starting pitcher Luke Moran. In the top of the third, the Green Wave got a leadoff double from Brennan Middleton, with Middleton moving to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Nick Boullosa then grounded out to the first baseman to drive in his 19th RBI of the season.
The Cougars responded with a run of their own against Tulane (31-26) starting pitcher Alex Byo when allowed a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the inning. Landon Appling's infield single was gloved by Middleton at second, but the throw was wide of the first baseman and Appling moved to second. Ryan Still then singled through the right side and Appling slid safely into home before the throw reached the plate.
With the game knotted at 1-1, Tulane erupted for five runs on three hits and benefitted from four walks by Houston reliever Travis Jenkins. The inning stated with a Matt Ryan walk, Cody Robinson double and a one-out walk to Nick Schneeberger to load the bases. Bowen Woodson entered and delivered a pinch-hit double into the right-center field gap to give the Green Wave the lead. Blake Crohan singled to re-load the bases and back-to-back walks to Garrett Cannizaro and Middleton plated two more runs. A sacrifice fly from Boullosa plated the final run of the frame to make it 6-1 in favor of the Olive and Blue.
Jeremy Schaffer scored the final run of the game as he walked to start the inning, moved to second on a ground out and came in to score on a two-out RBI single by Woodson.
Byo tossed seven strong innings in the start and allowed one unearned run on six hits. The sophomore walked one and struck out two batters to improve to 3-2 on the season. Andrew Garner came on and threw one and two-thirds inning scoreless, allowing only a hit, before Robby Broach ended to get the final out of the game - and his career - on a fly ball to left center field.
Boullosa, Middleton, Woodson and Cody Robinson all collected two hits in a game, with Boullosa driving in two RBI's. Woodson posted three RBI's, while Cannizaro and Middleton each recorded RBI's in the game. Seven different players scored runs in the game, while Tulane grabbed ten hits for the 22nd time this season.
