
Two Signees Selected on Day Two of MLB Draft

NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane baseball program watched as the first players from their program had thier named called on day two of the 2011 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Matt Lane's phone rang in the ninth round, while Alex Massey was taken in the 27th round.
Lane signed with the Green Wave in the fall and played his sophomore season at Northwest Florida State College. The left-hander tossed 99.1 innings in 17 appearances on the mound - 14 starts - and posted an 8-5 overall record. He allowed just 79 hits, just 17 of which went for extra bases, issued 34 walks and struck out 92 batters. He threw four complete games, three of those ending in shutouts, and limited opposing hitters to a meager .219 batting average.
Lane began his career at Mississippi State before transferring to the junior college in Niceville, Fla. and earning All-Panhandle Conference accolades. The Marietta, Ga. native was a high school All-National Team pick in 2009 by BaseballClearingHouse.net and helped the Greyhounds to a 2708 overall record and a Georgia 6A State Championship during his senior season on the mound.
Massey helped Catholic (La.) High School to their second straight Louisiana High School Athletic Association 5A State Championship last May. The right handed pitcher was an All-State 5A pick this season and was a teammate of current Green Wave pitcher Alex Facundus.
