NEW ORLEANS - The first national postseason honor rolled in for the Tulane baseball team earlier this week, as freshman reliever Alex Facundus was named to the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Freshman All-American Team. The rookie becomes the 20th player in Tulane history to earn the honor and is the first to grab the award from Collegiate Baseball since 2008.
Facundus was the main option out of the bullpen for head coach Rick Jones during the season. The right-hander made a team-best 29 appearances on the season and compiled an 8-2 record. All 29 appearances were out of the bullpen and he held opponents to a .225 batting average against. In 39.1 innings of work, Facundus fanned 23 batters and allowed 29 hits.
The rookie was selected to the 2011 Conference USA All-Freshman Team and ended the season tied for third in C-USA in wins (8). He also ranked fourth in appearances (29) and tenth in games finished (12). Facundus picked up his wins over Sam Houston State, George Washington (Twice), at Ole Miss, at Southern Miss, at UCF, versus Memphis and at Marshall.
The Baton Rouge, La. native joins an exclusive group of Green Wave rookies to land a spot on a Freshman All-American Team. Facundus joins current teammates Jeremy Schaffer (2009) and Blake Crohan (2010) and is the 20th player to grab Freshman All-American honors while wearing the Olive and Blue.
This marks the fourth straight year that a Tulane rookie has earned the distinction, marking the second longest streak in school history. Tulane had at least one honoree in five straight season from 1999-2003.
