PROVIDENCE, R.I. - In Tulane's first weekend of play associated with the American Athletic Conference, one of its Green Wave women's basketball players has already earned a conference weekly award. After scoring a combined 28 points in victories over Mississippi Valley State and McNeese State, Kolby Morgan has been named American Freshman of the Week.
"Kolby (Morgan) had an impressive opening weekend on both ends of the floor," said Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton. "She shot .500 or above from the floor in both games and averaged 6 rebounds. It's exciting to see her to grow."
Morgan's 28 combined points in her opening weekend debut stood as the third most for a freshman in her first two games with the Green Wave in the last 21 years under Coach Stockton. Only sophomore Leslie Vorpahl (30 pts) and Grace Daley (31 pts in 1996-97) have done better.
More impressively is the fact that Morgan is averaging a .571 field goal percentage. In game one, the New Orleans native put on a great shooting display, going 7-11 from the field on her way to a game high 16 points. In game two, Morgan helped clinch victory over McNeese State in the second half, scoring 9 of her 12 points in said period on 4-7 shooting from the floor.
In addition, Morgan is also making big contributions on the defensive side of the ball. The 5'8" guard totaled five and seven rebounds in the opening contest and recorded a team high four steals vs. Mississippi Valley State.
Morgan and the Green Wave are off to their fifth straight 2-0 start and will resume play this Wednesday when they hit the road to Baton Rouge for a 7 p.m. CT tip-off vs. LSU (1-1).
